Upset Alert: Usos and Christian Defeat The Shield on Smackdown 6-28-13

This past Friday on the June 28th, 2013 edition of Smackdown, The Usos and Christian defeated The Shield CLEANLY in what has to be one of the biggest upsets of the last couple of years. While I am happy for Christian and even more for the Usos, I must say that the booking makes no sense.

What WWE is telling you is that John Cena, Daniel Bryan, and Kane could not defeat The Shield.

Ryback and Team Hell No could not defeat The Shield.

Chris Jericho and Team Hell No could not defeat The Shield.

The Undertaker, Kane, and Daniel Bryan could not defeat The Shield.

But... Christian and the Usos defeated The Shield clean? This is what doesn't make sense sometimes about WWE's booking style. They spent the last 8 months showing us that the biggest names in the business such as John Cena, The Rock, The Undertaker, Ryback, etc could not stop the Shield... but now they expect us all to believe that the Usos who most of the time can't even make it on the Pay-Per-View cards and long time upper mid-carder Christian can beat them. 

Is this more a case of the rise of The Usos or the start of the marginalization of The Shield?

John Cena Buries the World Heavyweight Championship on RAW - June 24, 2013

On the June 24th edition of RAW, John Cena buried the World Heavyweight Championship and ECW Championship in a promo response to Mark Henry's retirement hoax by stating "...maybe he (Mark Henry) realizes time is running out... and he will not have a legacy in the WWE unless he holds on to this (WWE Championship)".

In this promo John Cena implies that the only way Henry will have a legacy is if he wins the WWE Championship. Mark Henry is a former World Heavyweight Champion and ECW Champion and yet according to Cena Henry would have no legacy despite these accolades unless he wins the WWE title. Wow Cena. Way to basically say winning the World Heavyweight Championship doesn't mean jack. Way to bury all the wrestlers who only held the World Heavyweight Championship and ECW Championship.

I wonder how guys like Christian, Booker T, and Goldberg feel about that statement given that Christian like Henry in WWE has only held the World Heavyweight Championship and ECW Championship. So if Christian doesn't win the WWE title does that mean Christian has no legacy either?

What about Booker T who only held the World Heavyweight Championship in the WWE. Does Booker T's legacy mean nothing?

That statement by Cena was completely bogus and came across as arrogant (though I don't think he meant it that way). It really gets on my nerves sometimes when Cena makes statements that other wrestler's accomplishments mean nothing unless they beat him for the WWE Championship. He made similar statements to CM Punk back in 2011 when he claimed in a promo that Punk basically had to prove to Cena that he was more than a "loud mouthed one hit wonder". Who does Cena think he is sometimes? Every now and then he makes statements during his promos that make him unintentionally come across as full of himself. His ego amazes me sometimes.

Cena is not the be all end all of pro wrestling. He's not the best mic worker. He's not the best wrestler. He will go down as the biggest wrestler in the smallest pond of main event talent in modern WWE history. A champion of a bunch of nobodies and part-time has beens for nearly a decade.

Don't let John Cena fool all of you. Mark Henry's legacy is secure. I think World Heavyweight Champion, ECW Champion, World's Strongest Man, and U.S. Olympian is a pretty amazing legacy that will mean plenty to a lot of young men after he hangs up his boots. Henry's face may not have graced a box of Fruity Pebbles cereal or the cover of a poorly acted straight-to-dvd movie release, but at least Henry can say that he was among the top athletes in the world in some real sports. The World's Strongest Man and U.S. Olympian are legitimate sports accomplishments that Cena will never be able to lay claim to. Unlike John Cena, Mark Henry is a legitimate sports athlete outside the world of pro wrestling and for that I will always respect Mark Henry over John Cena when it comes to athletic accomplishments.

How WWE Ruined Ryback

Eight months ago, Ryback was riding a seemingly unstoppable wave of momentum as a monster face and it was just a matter of time before he would win the WWE Championship. He had been undefeated for 6 months as he disposed of jobbers and mid-carders right and left on his way to 38-0 record. Fast forward 8 months and Ryback has been ruined. So what happened?

For some reason, WWE Creative is still booking him as a main event monster but now no one believes in Ryback anymore. Why? WWE Creative thought it would make sense to completely derail all of Ryback's momentum by having him lose at 7 straight Pay-Per-Views. He lost to CM Punk at Hell in Cell, he lost to CM Punk at Survivor Series, he lost to The Shield in a tag match at TLC, he lost the Royal Rumble to John Cena, he lost to The Shield in a tag match at Elimination Chamber, he lost to Mark Henry (clean) at Wrestlemania 29, and he wrestled to a No Contest with John Cena at Extreme Rules.

To make matters worse, WWE decided to turn Ryback from a monster face into a babbling barbaric heel. Once he became a heel, WWE thought it would be great to give Ryback a mic and let him cut long drawn out promos that exposed his weaknesses as a mic worker. Ryback's drawn out promos caused John Cena to unintentionally bury Ryback because Ryback was unable to successfully trade barbs on the mic with Cena. So Cena and Ryback's verbal confrontations always leave everyone feeling like Cena got the better of Ryback.

It also made no sense how they retroactively claimed Ryback and Cena used to be friends when they never cut any promos as "buddies", and never really tagged together. There was never any inclination that they were friends... but for some reason now that Ryback is a heel they claim that him and Cena were best buddies at one time. WWE revisionist history that makes no sense.

Despite all of this, WWE still wants us to buy Ryback as an unstoppable legitimate threat to Cena's championship. I'm sorry, but if a boxer lost 7 straight pay-per-views... would you still think he was a threat to win the Heavyweight Title? NO! He'd be considered a bum. If a MMA fighter lost 7 straight Pay-Per-View fights Dana White would cut him from the UFC.

In over 20+ years of watching wrestling, I don't think I've ever seen this before. I've never seen a guy lose at 7 straight Pay-Per-Views and still be promoted as unstoppable. It makes no sense. WWE has ruined Ryback and I fully expect Ryback's winless drought on Pay-Per-View to extend to 8 straight Pay-Per-Views after Sunday's WWE Payback Pay-Per-View. WWE was onto something huge with Ryback 8 months ago... now it seems as though it won't be long until Ryback is horn tooting with Santino Marella or in a losing feud with Hornswoggle.

WWE Plot Holes: How is Ryback the Number One Contender?

At Extreme Rules, the machine Ryback will take on WWE Champion John Cena for the heavyweight title. One problem though, how did Ryback become the number one contender?

Ryback has lost at every pay per view dating back to October. Ryback has lost at Hell in a Cell, Survivor Series, TLC, Royal Rumble, Elimination Chamber, and Wrestlemania. How on Earth can a guy that has lost at 6 straight pay-per-views be the number one contender? If you include RAW, Ryback has lost his last 3 shots at the WWE Championship.

Here's where the plot hole gets even bigger. Mark Henry defeated Ryback CLEANLY at Wrestlemania 29. The next night on RAW, Mark Henry coming off a win at Wrestlemania was told in order to get a title shot he would have to defeat John Cena in a non-title match (Henry lost by Count Out) just to become the number one contender. Yet, Ryback who had just lost to Henry at Wrestlemania was simply declared the number one contender to face Cena at Extreme Rules. Why did Henry coming off a win over Ryback at Wrestlemania have to defeat Cena in a non-title match just to get a shot at the title, but Ryback who has lost at every pay-per-view for the last six months simply gets a title shot?

Ryback becoming number one contender completely flies in the face of story line and basic sports logic. There is no logical reason that Ryback should be number one contender over Mark Henry or anyone else. This is a major plot hole that cannot be explained.

Just because Ryback attacked Cena on RAW does not mean he's the number one contender. By that logic, the Shield should be the number one contenders to every title in the WWE.

The Rock vs John Cena II "Twice in a Lifetime" Equals Money Grab

At Wrestlemania 28, we witnessed a dream match between The Rock and John Cena in what was advertised and billed as "Once in a Lifetime". The Rock, arguably the biggest star of the Attitude Era versus the biggest star of the Modern Era John Cena. The posters and billboards told us that The Rock vs John Cena was a one time match... boy we were fooled.

Now, just one year later we are going to see The Rock vs John Cena AGAIN at Wrestlemania 29. This means that the WWE retroactively committed false advertising at Wrestlemania 28. I can't help but feel like this rematch is nothing more than a money grab at this point. There were plenty of other more interesting match-ups for The Rock at Wrestlemania. Why not have The Rock face Triple H or The Undertaker? Why waste The Rock's limited schedule on a match we've already seen at Wrestlemania just a year ago.

Funny enough, this isn't the first time WWE has allegedly falsely advertised at Wrestlemania. Who can forget John Cena on RAW after Wrestlemania 27 stating that Cena vs Rock at Wrestlemania 28 would be for the WWE Championship, but when the match came around it wasn't a title match at all.

Who can forget when WWE advertised a US Title match between Sheamus and Daniel Bryan at Wrestlemania 27 only to screw the fans who ordered the PPV to see that match because WWE decided to make it a dark match and not tell anybody. Technically, the WWE is able to get away with stuff like this by using the "Card Subject to Change" scapegoat. It just irks me when WWE advertises matches and doesn't deliver. It's one thing if they can't deliver because one of the wrestlers got injured or is in no condition to compete (ex. Scott Hall, Jeff Hardy), but if they are able to compete then don't cheat the fans who paid to see what YOU ADVERTISED. You got to love that "Card Subject to Change" scapegoat. So lets gear up for the "Second Time in a Lifetime".

Once in a Lifetime was a dream match. Twice in a Lifetime is a money grab.

John Cena Replaces Fred Flintstone As Pebbles Cereal Mascot

John Cena will be replacing Fred Flintstone beginning today (January 8, 2013) for a limited time on 8 million boxes of Post Fruity Pebbles and Cocoa Pebbles. Last year in 2012, John Cena graced the box of Post Fruity Pebbles after The Rock teased John Cena stating that John was "running around like a big bowl of Fruity Pebbles". Fans began chanting "Fruity Pebbles" in arenas around the country whenever Cena would appear. 

Why John Cena Does Not Deserve the Superstar of the Year Slammy Award

Recently as we rounded out the 2012 year, WWE hosted their yearly "Slammy Awards" with the most coveted award being the Superstar of the Year Slammy Award. In a year that saw CM Punk as the one and only WWE Champion from January 1 to December 31 of 2012... somehow John Cena was awarded the Superstar of the Year Award. Any other year over the past seven years and I would understand if John Cena won the award, but John Cena in 2012 should have been the last person to be Superstar of the Year. I'm sure there will be plenty of Bieber-esque level Cena fanatics that will try to call me a "hater" or argue that John Cena deserved it but let's be real here. We all know John Cena did not deserve the award this year. Don't believe me? I'll prove it.

First of all, John Cena didn't even win any titles in 2012. That's right as hard as it is to believe, John Cena as far as title wins laid an egg for the first time since Wrestlemania 21. He didn't even win any mid-card titles like the Tag Team Championships this past year. How does a guy that didn't win any title belts get the Superstar of the Year Award?

Now I'm sure Cena fanatics will argue "He won Money in the Bank!". Yes. Cena did win Money in the Bank, but then what happened? He turned around and became the FIRST wrestler to cash in Money in the Bank and FAIL. His failure cashing in canceled out him winning MITB. What made things worse was that after he blew his Money in the Bank cash in, he tried to take Dolph Ziggler's Money in the Bank briefcase and FAILED AGAIN.

Speaking of Dolph Ziggler in 2012, didn't he steal John Cena's girlfriend too?

Cena also challenged CM Punk for the WWE Championship probably a half dozen times and failed in every attempt.

Let's not forget that he also LOST at Wrestlemania to The Rock in what could have been "career defining" match. And a little side note... this was the 2nd year in a row he lost at Wrestlemania. Oh, and didn't he claim that he was going to walk into Wrestlemania 28 as the WWE Champion so he could fight The Rock for the title? He failed to deliver on that proclamation too.

All this and I haven't even gotten to the icing on the cake. You want to know the elephant in the room that no one wants to see? John Cena ducked out of fighting Ryback. John Cena despite losing several title shots he was given... still claimed that he deserved to be the number one contender. At the time, the undefeated Ryback was vying to be the number one contender as well. However, instead of fighting Ryback for the number one contendership Cena willingly gave up his spot to Ryback because he claimed he wanted somebody to shut CM Punk up. Yeah right.

We all know the real reason he gave up his spot to Ryback. Cena wussed out of fighting Ryback because at the time Ryback was undefeated and Cena would have been perceived to be weaker than Ryback if they had fought at the time. This was WWE deja vu. Remember Stone Cold refused to job to the up-and-coming Brock Lesnar a decade ago, and to a lesser degree when Hogan ducked fighting Bret Hart (according to Bret).

So let's recap shall we? John Cena lost at Wrestlemania, became the first guy to cash in Money in the Bank and lose, failed in his countless shots at CM Punk's title, wussed out of fighting Ryback for the number one contendership, failed to beat Dolph Ziggler for Dolph's MITB briefcase, and had his girlfriend AJ Lee stolen by Ziggler.

Even his movie career sunk in 2012 as he starred in the Nickelodeon TV movie flop "Fred 3: Camp Fred" which drew 39% less viewers than the 2nd film did.

The Slammy Awards are a farce. A sham. Anybody will tell you that John Cena winning Superstar of the Year was a joke. CM Punk was the true Superstar of the Year. You could also make a legitimate case for Daniel Bryan being Superstar of the Year. CM Punk is the longest reigning WWE Champion of the last 25 years. How is he not the Superstar of the Year?

John Cena recently announced on twitter that he had huge news to deliver on Monday night RAW. This led wrestling fans to buzz about what the epic news could be. Once again though, a WWE hyped announcement turns out to be nothing but hot air as all John Cena announced is that he would be participating in the Money in the Bank Ladder Match this year. Why is this NOT huge news? Well, John Cena's entry into the match pretty much guarantees that more than likely he is going to win the Money in the Bank and go on to face CM Punk at Summerslam. Is it just me or are you guys getting tired of WWE hyping big surprises and then failing to deliver every time? Remember Chris Jericho saying that at the Royal Rumble it was going to be the end of the world as you know it, only to be pathetically eliminated and nothing happened.
