The Rock vs John Cena II "Twice in a Lifetime" Equals Money Grab

At Wrestlemania 28, we witnessed a dream match between The Rock and John Cena in what was advertised and billed as "Once in a Lifetime". The Rock, arguably the biggest star of the Attitude Era versus the biggest star of the Modern Era John Cena. The posters and billboards told us that The Rock vs John Cena was a one time match... boy we were fooled.

Now, just one year later we are going to see The Rock vs John Cena AGAIN at Wrestlemania 29. This means that the WWE retroactively committed false advertising at Wrestlemania 28. I can't help but feel like this rematch is nothing more than a money grab at this point. There were plenty of other more interesting match-ups for The Rock at Wrestlemania. Why not have The Rock face Triple H or The Undertaker? Why waste The Rock's limited schedule on a match we've already seen at Wrestlemania just a year ago.

Funny enough, this isn't the first time WWE has allegedly falsely advertised at Wrestlemania. Who can forget John Cena on RAW after Wrestlemania 27 stating that Cena vs Rock at Wrestlemania 28 would be for the WWE Championship, but when the match came around it wasn't a title match at all.

Who can forget when WWE advertised a US Title match between Sheamus and Daniel Bryan at Wrestlemania 27 only to screw the fans who ordered the PPV to see that match because WWE decided to make it a dark match and not tell anybody. Technically, the WWE is able to get away with stuff like this by using the "Card Subject to Change" scapegoat. It just irks me when WWE advertises matches and doesn't deliver. It's one thing if they can't deliver because one of the wrestlers got injured or is in no condition to compete (ex. Scott Hall, Jeff Hardy), but if they are able to compete then don't cheat the fans who paid to see what YOU ADVERTISED. You got to love that "Card Subject to Change" scapegoat. So lets gear up for the "Second Time in a Lifetime".

Once in a Lifetime was a dream match. Twice in a Lifetime is a money grab.

John Cena Replaces Fred Flintstone As Pebbles Cereal Mascot

John Cena will be replacing Fred Flintstone beginning today (January 8, 2013) for a limited time on 8 million boxes of Post Fruity Pebbles and Cocoa Pebbles. Last year in 2012, John Cena graced the box of Post Fruity Pebbles after The Rock teased John Cena stating that John was "running around like a big bowl of Fruity Pebbles". Fans began chanting "Fruity Pebbles" in arenas around the country whenever Cena would appear. 

Why John Cena Does Not Deserve the Superstar of the Year Slammy Award

Recently as we rounded out the 2012 year, WWE hosted their yearly "Slammy Awards" with the most coveted award being the Superstar of the Year Slammy Award. In a year that saw CM Punk as the one and only WWE Champion from January 1 to December 31 of 2012... somehow John Cena was awarded the Superstar of the Year Award. Any other year over the past seven years and I would understand if John Cena won the award, but John Cena in 2012 should have been the last person to be Superstar of the Year. I'm sure there will be plenty of Bieber-esque level Cena fanatics that will try to call me a "hater" or argue that John Cena deserved it but let's be real here. We all know John Cena did not deserve the award this year. Don't believe me? I'll prove it.

First of all, John Cena didn't even win any titles in 2012. That's right as hard as it is to believe, John Cena as far as title wins laid an egg for the first time since Wrestlemania 21. He didn't even win any mid-card titles like the Tag Team Championships this past year. How does a guy that didn't win any title belts get the Superstar of the Year Award?

Now I'm sure Cena fanatics will argue "He won Money in the Bank!". Yes. Cena did win Money in the Bank, but then what happened? He turned around and became the FIRST wrestler to cash in Money in the Bank and FAIL. His failure cashing in canceled out him winning MITB. What made things worse was that after he blew his Money in the Bank cash in, he tried to take Dolph Ziggler's Money in the Bank briefcase and FAILED AGAIN.

Speaking of Dolph Ziggler in 2012, didn't he steal John Cena's girlfriend too?

Cena also challenged CM Punk for the WWE Championship probably a half dozen times and failed in every attempt.

Let's not forget that he also LOST at Wrestlemania to The Rock in what could have been "career defining" match. And a little side note... this was the 2nd year in a row he lost at Wrestlemania. Oh, and didn't he claim that he was going to walk into Wrestlemania 28 as the WWE Champion so he could fight The Rock for the title? He failed to deliver on that proclamation too.

All this and I haven't even gotten to the icing on the cake. You want to know the elephant in the room that no one wants to see? John Cena ducked out of fighting Ryback. John Cena despite losing several title shots he was given... still claimed that he deserved to be the number one contender. At the time, the undefeated Ryback was vying to be the number one contender as well. However, instead of fighting Ryback for the number one contendership Cena willingly gave up his spot to Ryback because he claimed he wanted somebody to shut CM Punk up. Yeah right.

We all know the real reason he gave up his spot to Ryback. Cena wussed out of fighting Ryback because at the time Ryback was undefeated and Cena would have been perceived to be weaker than Ryback if they had fought at the time. This was WWE deja vu. Remember Stone Cold refused to job to the up-and-coming Brock Lesnar a decade ago, and to a lesser degree when Hogan ducked fighting Bret Hart (according to Bret).

So let's recap shall we? John Cena lost at Wrestlemania, became the first guy to cash in Money in the Bank and lose, failed in his countless shots at CM Punk's title, wussed out of fighting Ryback for the number one contendership, failed to beat Dolph Ziggler for Dolph's MITB briefcase, and had his girlfriend AJ Lee stolen by Ziggler.

Even his movie career sunk in 2012 as he starred in the Nickelodeon TV movie flop "Fred 3: Camp Fred" which drew 39% less viewers than the 2nd film did.

The Slammy Awards are a farce. A sham. Anybody will tell you that John Cena winning Superstar of the Year was a joke. CM Punk was the true Superstar of the Year. You could also make a legitimate case for Daniel Bryan being Superstar of the Year. CM Punk is the longest reigning WWE Champion of the last 25 years. How is he not the Superstar of the Year?

Is WWE Using Attitude Era Stars to Prop Up Sagging Ratings and PPV Buys?

One thing I find amusing in the world of wrestling is the number of fans online that accuse TNA of being nothing but a bunch of old guys. The ironic thing is that WWE is guilty of the same thing but no one ever seems to mention that. Over the last two years the WWE has been a virtual revolving door to the Attitude Era, but no one ever says the WWE is over using older stars. The fact is the WWE has been constantly bringing back old stars to prop up sagging ratings and ppv buy rates. Every time an older star leaves another shows up to keep the ratings from going down.

Over the last two years, we've seen Bret Hart, Mick Foley, Booker T, Stone Cold, The Rock, Kevin Nash, Shawn Michaels, Trish Stratus and now Brock Lesnar. This is an alarming trend because it shows that the WWE is struggling to create new stars. They have to keep falling back on Attitude Era stars to anchor the company. The 3 headlining matches at Wrestlemania 28 featured The Rock, Shawn Michaels, Triple H, The Undertaker and Chris Jericho. This was also the 8th consecutive Wrestlemania that John Cena has headlined. So the only newer star was CM Punk.

Wrestlemania 27's line-up was so weak that they needed the Rock guest hosting, Stone Cold reffing, Trish Stratus wrestling, and Undertaker/Triple H headlining just to prop up buys and put make-up on an otherwise ugly ppv line-up.

Wrestlemania 26 featured the wrestling return of Bret "Hitman" Hart taking on Vince McMahon. It also featured Shawn Michaels vs Undertaker II.

In between these Wrestlemania's we've seen Bret Hart win the US title, Kevin Nash in a Sledgehammer ladder match, Mick Foley hosting "This is your life" segments, Triple H taking the spotlight off of a white hot CM Punk last Summer, Mark Henry and Kane win the World Title (people forget that Mark Henry has been with the WWF since 1996 and is 40 years old and Kane is 44 years old), and Brock Lesnar returning to headline Extreme Rules.

This is definitely an alarming trend because in most of these cases the older stars are not putting over up-and-coming stars, or else we would be having a different conversation. Think about it. With the exception of Chris Jericho putting over CM Punk the rest of the older mega stars are just putting each other over. Shawn Michaels and Triple H put the Undertaker over twice. The Rock fought John Cena which doesn't elevate anyone, especially when The Rock wins. Since Kane has returned with the mask he's buried up-and-coming talent Zack Ryder while feuding with John Cena and Randy Orton. Kane feuding with Cena and Orton doesn't elevate anyone. If these stars would spend more time putting over younger stars instead of burying them, the WWE might be in a better spot. Until the WWE starts to get past Cena and Orton, and stops relying on Attitude Era stars as a crutch the WWE's ratings will continue to slowly decline because they refuse to introduce fresh new characters and make them important.

Look at Kofi Kingston, a guy that became really popular to the point that he took out Randy Orton in Madison Square Garden at the Old School edition of Monday Night Raw and has since gone nowhere but downhill. Kofi Kingston won his first Intercontinental Title FOUR YEARS ago and he is actually less important now than he was then. Instead of capitalizing on Kofi's booming popularity, WWE thought it would be a greater idea to put the World Title on Jack Swagger. Funny thing is, Jack Swagger wasn't even over while Kofi Kingston had been over. It's poor business decisions like this that make you smack your forehead with disbelief.

Why The Rock Couldn't Save Survivor Series 2011 Buy Rates

Well, the Survivor Series 2011 PPV buy rates are in and the result is not good. Survivor Series this year pulled in 260,000 buys... which is up only 16,000 buys from last years 244,000. This is considered a major flop as it was expected to do much more with the Rock's return to the ring for his first match in seven years. The Rock only brought in 16,000 more buyers than last year. So how come the Rock's epic in-ring return at Survivor Series didn't save the PPV numbers? Well, it's pretty easy to figure out if you think about it.

Let's call a spade a spade and break down Survivor Series in the simplest of terms. Survivor Series was The Rock or bust. That was the only selling point of the ppv. The entire rest of the card was weak. I mean c'mon look at the rest of the card. CM Punk vs Alberto Del Rio was the second biggest match on the card and while Punk is a big seller... WWE does not have any truly great heels right now. Also, we've seen these guys fight a bunch a times already. Then you have Big Show vs Mark Henry which I just can't buy into this feud since for years they have fought each other in mid-card matches with no fan fare. I saw this as no different. I didn't care about Team Barrett vs Team Orton as there wasn't any true build to this match. Next is Beth Phoenix vs Eve Torres.... match we've seen on RAW 100 times already for free. The divas division sucks. Plain and simple. That just leaves Dolph Ziggler versus John Morrison, which we all knew Morrison would lose since he was on his way out of the company anyway. So, Survivor Series was The Rock or bust.

Also, The Rock did almost NOTHING to build this match other than a cheap one night live appearance the Monday before the PPV. He showed up one time before that via satellite to give out some more idle threats from his house. John Cena did everything he could to sell this match, but when the Rock isn't around to build the match it just didn't seem special at all. We all know that The Rock is just going to go away again so what's the point of buying it? Then, the whole match seemed stupid and completely lacked continuity. How many times have we seen John Cena defeat R-Truth and the Miz? Countless times... but now all of a sudden he needs the Rock's help? It was unbelievable. Plus, it was obvious that The Rock and Cena were going to smash Miz and Truth so why would I pay 50 bucks for a squash match?

Survivor Series failure rests squarely on creative's shoulders. It was a completely lack luster line up with the only good unique match being The Rock and Cena. Survivor Series was nothing more than a glorified Vengeance PPV with The Rock thrown in. WWE basically tried to take a short cut to more PPV buys by thinking they could just throw the Rock in and have a mega hit ppv instead of actually building a great card and it showed. People are too smart for that. People have to be smart with their money in this economy, and WWE needs to learn to build a quality PPV instead of going for a cheap quick fix. The same thing happened at last year's Wrestlemania. A lot of make up to try to cover up what was nothing more than a pitiful PPV card.

CM Punk Defeats Alberto Del Rio at Survivor Series, Regains the WWE Championship

At Survivor Series, CM Punk walked in the challenger and walked out with the WWE Championship. Punk defeated a game Alberto Del Rio, and kept his eye out for Del Rio's ring announcer Ricardo Rodriguez. The question now is where does the "Voice of the Voiceless" go from here? Last time Punk won the WWE title, we never really got to see his reign go anywhere because John Cena won that imposter WWE title and they had to have that unification match at Summerslam. Punk defeated Cena, but Del Rio immediately cashed in his Money in the Bank briefcase moments later so we never actually got to see CM Punk's character go anywhere as champion. Hopefully, WWE will do him justice this time around and we'll get to see what Punk can really do as the champ.

What gets me is that I still don't know what the overall point to Del Rio winning the title back from Cena was. I mean, Del Rio didn't go anywhere as champion. He actually had less momentum as champion then he did before he originally cashed in the MITB briefcase as a challenger. I'm a firm believer that Del Rio's MITB cash in really hurt CM Punk's momentum a couple of months ago, and it was kind of ironic because Del Rio seemed to lose his momentum after he lost to Edge at Wrestlemania. So what was the point of using one guy with lost momentum to derail another guy's white hot momentum? Either way, the fact remains that WWE righted this injustice by finally putting the strap back on Punk. Let's see where Punk goes with it.

Why Wrestling Fans Boo John Cena

The question that a lot of wrestling fans ask is why do wrestling fans boo John Cena? In this blog post, I aim to outline exactly why fans dislike, despise, and ultimately boo John Cena.

John Cena is literally the "face" of the WWE. He is the biggest star of the current generation of professional wrestling, and one of the biggest baby faces of all-time. He has a chiseled physique, movie star good looks, loads of charisma, and has beaten the biggest stars in the sport. He is also an 11 time World Champion, 3 time United States Champion, 4 time Tag Team Champion, and the 2008 Royal Rumble Winner. He has made as much or more merchandise sales than Hulk Hogan and Stone Cold Steve Austin. His Rap Album debuted at number 15 on the Billboard 200. He has starred in several feature films including The Marine, 12 Rounds, and Legendary. He is the the current face of the WWE, inheriting that torch from predecessors such as The Rock, Stone Cold Steve Austin, Shawn Michaels, Bret Hart, and Hulk Hogan who came before him. So, why does arguably the biggest baby face of all-time walk into any arena in the country and get booed by half the fans? Why did fans boo him during his feud with Triple H and cheer for Triple H who was the villain? Why do fans chant "You Suck", "You Can't Wrestle" to John Cena but no one else. It's a question that WWE Executives have never really understood. This response has NEVER happened to any other "face of the company". So why hate John Cena? Here's a list of 10 reasons why.


1) Lack of Moves - People chant "You Can't Wrestle" to John Cena because he has only a handful of moves. Fishermen's Suplex, Five Knuckle Shuffle, Attitude Adjustment, STF, Top Rope Leg Drop are his only real maneuvers. Unless you count a basic clothesline, running shoulder block, or just punching someone... he really has 2 or 3 moves besides his 3 finishers.

2) Lackluster Finishing Moves - The Attitude Adjustment is nothing more than hoisting a guy on your shoulders and just dumping him off. It's not a believable finishing move in the modern era. The Five Knuckle Shuffle is nothing more than a falling punch with a taunt. Then the STF, Cena's submission move is just a poor man's Crippler Crossface.

3) Inability to Sell - His inability to sell moves and get as far as he has in the business astounds me. He never really even looks like he is in pain, he just squeezes his eyes shut... but looks like he is totally faking it. When you're a wrestler, you are supposed to sell beat downs. Cena shows no emotion when he gets beat down. He looks more like he's just tired and squeezing his eyes shut instead of a guy that is supposed to be writhing in pain from a devastating move he just received. Watch a Rock, Hogan, or Shawn Michaels match... and watch how they writhe in pain and sell injuries and moves. Then watch a John Cena match... and how he just squeezes his eyes shut and just looks sort of tired. It's just horrible acting on his part.

4) Ripped Off Character - What ticks fans off about Cena is that his entire persona is just a rip off/hybrid of two old school wrestlers, The Rock and Hulk Hogan and here's how. His take a beating the whole match, and then "magically come back" with 2-3 moves and win is a copy-and-paste of the old Hulkster Match formula. Hulk Hogan would come out and take a beating most of the match, and then "Hulk Up" (magically come back) and hit 2 or 3 moves and win the match. That worked in the '80s because wrestlers didn't have many moves back then, and matches would go 20-30 minutes so fans enjoyed that because it was different. Also, during the Cold War era it was inspiring to see an American beat down only to persevere and come back. Now, it's played out and predictable. It's stale and boring. Even Chavo Guerrero referred to it as "another BS Lazy Comeback".

Then, John Cena's Five Knuckle Shuffle to Attitude Adjustment sequence is a carbon copy of The Rock's People's Elbow to Rock Bottom sequence. So, it just seems like a cheap rehash.

John Cena's catch phrase "You Want Some, Come Get Some" is ripped off of Rick Steiner's "You Want Some, Come Get Some... You Don't Like Me, Bite Me" catch phrase. Also, "You Want Some, Come Get Some" also is essentially the same as saying The Rock's "Just Bring It" catch phrase. In other words, the running theme is that John Cena's persona from Mid 2005-Present is super lazy... and just feels like the WWE cherry picked a couple of things from the Rock and Hulk Hogan that worked  in the past and copy-and-pasted them onto John Cena. In other words, John Cena's persona was milked right out of the unoriginal "Corporate Machine".

5) WWE Forces Him Down Our Throats- From April 2005 to the present (July 2011), John Cena has headlined a staggering 60 PPV Events! (And you could argue a couple more if you include some of the matches that he didn't fight for a title, but had the most hyped about match). People are tired of seeing him fight for the World Title. It's so over done, stale, boring, repetitive, and frustrating. Who wants to order a WWE PPV when the same guy fights for the belt every month? He actually probably would've headlined more had he not had a couple of injuries over the years. It's like listening to a great song every day for 6 years. You start to hate that song. 6) Promos Are Mind Numbingly Repetitive - He's reached a point now where all his promos sound the same.  It's usually the same "WWE is my life... I defend this belt night in and night out... and you want some, come get some". It usually doesn't vary much from that.

7) John Cena Has to Make Everything About John Cena - He will come out and get involved in things that don't even concern him. After CM Punk got suspended, John Cena came out the next week to "call out" Vince McMahon. He told Vince "What if I speak my mind are you going to suspend me too?" and told Vince if that's how Vince is doing things he wants no part and tried to walk out. Umm.... first, why do you even care? The situation had NOTHING to do with you. How did CM Punk getting suspended end with John Cena calling out Vince McMahon and nearly walking out? Shouldn't CM Punk have called out Vince and walked out? He's as bad as Hogan about taking the spot light from situations that have nothing to do with him.

8) Why do Women and Children Cheer John Cena? Women cheer for John Cena because he has movie star good looks, and a chiseled physique. They cheer for him because he is "hot". Children cheer for him because he is a cut and dry good guy who fights for what is right, and dresses colorful. Kids respond to that.

9) Why Do Men Hate John Cena? Other than all the reasons I have already given, men hate John Cena because he's the star quarterback from your high school who had everything handed to him. He's that guy from your job or your school that does absolutely nothing and gets all the girls because of his movie star good looks. He's that guy from your job that gets the employee of the month award every single month, even though you're better at your job than he is. He's that lazy jock from your school who never had to try to do his school work because his teachers just gave him an A because he's the star of the football team or everyone lets him copy off their work, while you bust your butt studying and get a C. He's that guy from your job that gets all the promotions and accolades even though his work ethic sucks, while you bust your butt and your boss couldn't give a crap less about you. That's what men see when they look at John Cena.

10) "Super Cena" - The Internet Wrestling Community has a term for John Cena. They call him "SuperCena" because he wins 99.9% of the time, and is rarely ever even challenged. Who wants to watch a guy that gets beat down and just comes back and wins every single flipping match? Hit the snooze and let me know when his matches are over because I already know who will win.

11) John Cena Sold Out - What happened to the take no prisoners, battle rapping John Cena? Everyone loved the Doctor of Thug-a-nomics.... but as soon as he became WWE Champion at Wrestlemania 21... he changed. He became a shell of his former self. He quit wearing his hat backwards, quit wearing jerseys, and became the corporate monkey. He turned his hat forward, ditched the jerseys, stopped rapping, and started giving boring cookie cutter promos, and delivering the same lazy BS comeback match every night. He totally sold out when he became the face of the company. Gone is the edgy, gutsy John Cena... and all we're left with is this boring Rock/Hogan hybrid.

Vince Scared to Pull the Trigger on the Cena Machine

Well, it's draft time again. I'm usually not overly excited about the draft each year because they normally don't move anyone that matters and if they do... they usually go back to their brand after a month anyway. This year though, the draft started off with a bang... or so we thought. John Cena was drafted from RAW to Smackdown in a shocking moment that no one saw coming. I thought this was great as it would truly shake things up instead of claiming big things and falling short. This draft really delivered... until the end when Cena was drafted back to RAW... essentially wasting two draft picks. What was the point of even teasing it? This is another example of WWE having a great idea, but then turning around and being too scared to pull the trigger. It's like when Cena "joined" the Nexus. Now had he really joined and turned heel it would have been the biggest heel turn in 15 years and would truly shake the foundation of WWE to its core. Instead, he was nothing more than usual Cena forced to wear a Nexus shirt. He was just a slave to the Nexus, which was really lame. The storyline became boring at that point and seemed to drag on for months. The thing is, Vince McMahon is so scared to tamper with the Cena Money Making Machine that he refuses to do whats good for the product. In other words, Cena sells so much merchandise as a face that Vince is afraid to turn Cena heel because he might take a dip in merchandise sales. It's the same reason they won't turn Mysterio heel. He sells too many masks. WWE has gotten so corporate over the last 5 years its not even funny. Vince is trying to milk the Cena Machine for every penny he can get. Same with Mysterio. It's become less about bettering the product, and more about milking every cent he can and running an idea into the ground until no one cares and the well runs dry... and by that time it's too late to better the product because we stopped caring about that particular superstar. 

John Cena vs The Rock at Mania 28!

Cena vs Rock at Wrestlemania 28. This is what we have been waiting for. This is the kind of Wrestlemania main events that the company was built on. Finally WWE does something right lately. By letting the fans know of the main event one year in advance, that means they have a whole year to build to that match in the same way that Sting and Hogan built their feud for a year before Starrcade 97. Anticipation will grow, anxiety will increase because it's the match we all want to see. Now, with the main event set in advance they can figure out how to stack the card now... and this is how WWE will get over a million buys. They won't get it with silly guest appearances, and special refs, or celebrities. They get it with epic matches. Hogan vs Andre. Hogan vs Warrior. Savage vs Warrior. Stone Cold vs Rock. Rock vs Hogan. Not Miz vs Cena. This is what we want to see. 

Shark Jumping Moment of the Week

I may feature from time to time moments where wrestling truly "Jumped the Shark". Jumping the Shark is when a tv show or movie does something so absurd it's just unbelievable. Here the classic Shark Jumping moment when the nWo ran a semi-truck head on into an ambulance with The Rock inside. Attempted vehicular homicide on wrestling. Classic!

Triple H vs Undertaker lacks emotion, feels uninspired

Well, it looks like we're heading toward another HHH vs Undertaker match at Wrestlemania 27. I can't help but feel like this feud seems uninspired and almost boring. This might have been cool 9 years ago, but it just seems lame now. I thought it might have just been me, but even Bret "Hitman" Hart said it felt flat in an interview he gave recently. Triple H's promos seem so run of the mill and flat. The Undertaker isn't supposed to be charismatic... so in the end it all just seems hum drum. This confrontation seems to lack any emotion. HBK's appearance on RAW Monday was very much needed and helped inject some life into an otherwise yawn of a feud. You can tell how much he added to the mix when the crowd started chanting "One more match", and booing HHH and the Undertaker at anything they said to HBK. This is just one of the most unappealing Wrestlemania lineups ever... and you can tell by all the "make-up" they have put on Wrestlemania: The Rock guest hosting, Snooki wrestling, Stone Cold guest refereeing, HBK putting in his two cents.... because this Wrestlemania is shaping up to be very weak and will need all the help it can get. I expect lower buys this year.

Flashback of the Day: Sting Cuts a Classic Promo in Preparation for Slammiversary

In this flashback of the day, we see the Stinger cut another classic promo for TNA in preparation for the Slammiversary PPV. I keep going back to Sting promos for these flashbacks of the day, because I think people tend to forget how great and under rated Sting is at cutting promos. Stings charisma is unmatched in pro wrestling by anyone but the Rock when it comes to promos. This is also for the newer generation wrestling fans, who have never really seen Sting cut any promos and think that The Miz or John Cena cuts great promos. Gimme a break. Stinger is one of the all-time great mic workers, along with The Rock and Ric Flair.
