Why CM Punk and "Stone Cold" Steve Austin Are Nothing Alike

Ever since CM Punk dropped his first pipe bomb promo this past summer and became the Voice of the Voiceless, fans have been reaching out for how to describe CM Punk's rise to the top of the pro wrestling industry. However, I think the most common misconception is I often hear the Internet Wrestling Community describing CM Punk as the new Stone Cold. I also hear them refer to CM Punk's "Pipe Bomb" promo as Punk's "Austin 3:16" moment. I hate to burst every one's bubble, but CM Punk isn't the new Steve Austin, nor was his epic promo his "Austin 3:16" moment. I'm going to explain to every one that CM Punk and Stone Cold are apples and oranges.
Why CM Punk's "Pipe Bomb" promo is not his "Austin 3:16" moment - CM Punk's Earth shattering promo that he cut back during the Summer was CM Punk venting his frustrations at the status quo of WWE. He was tired of the main stream superstars that couldn't wrestle half as good as him being called "the best". He was tired of the being the best in the ring, on the mic, and on commentary and still being ignored by the company while John Cena gets all the accolades and hand outs because he has "the look". Punk's promo was about being held back by the administration. No matter how many times he went out and proved he was the best in the business, the corporate machine still labels John Cena the best. The same way that guys like Superfly Snuka and Jake Roberts were far better wrestlers than Hulk Hogan, yet it didn't matter because Hulk Hogan was always labeled as the be all end all of wrestling.
Steve Austin's "Austin 3:16" promo wasn't about being held back. It's implied that Austin simply put down Jake Roberts as being weak because he turned to religion. Austin yelled, "You got your Psalms, you got your John 3:16... well Austin 3:16 says I just whipped your ass!". Austin's promo was essentially him labeling Jake as a bible thumper and telling Jake Roberts that God didn't save him from Austin's wrath. Austin's promo was epic because no one in wrestling had ever been that raw and blunt before (at least not on tv). Wrestler's didn't curse on television back at the time, so it was jaw dropping and very edgy. When you look at it in retrospect, the Stone Cold character actually comes off like he doesn't believe in God, and that all the prayers and scriptures in the world didn't save Jake from Austin beating him. Stone Cold's promo was him mocking Jake "the Snake" Roberts because he turned to the Lord. When you actually examine Austin's promo, it really makes Austin come off as a bad person. (I'm referring to Stone Cold the character, not Steve Austin as a person).
Why CM Punk and Stone Cold are not similar - The only thing that is similar about Punk and Stone Cold is that they're both anti-establishment, but that's where the similarities end. Last time I checked, CM Punk wasn't driving monster trucks, a zamboni, being arrested every week, and just attacking anyone and everyone. CM Punk's character is more intellectual and smarter than Stone Cold's character. Stone Cold was about not being told what to do. CM Punk's character is more about being treated fairly and telling it like it is. If anything, CM Punk's character is actually more akin to characters like Chris Jericho's "Best in the World" gimmick and Punk's walking out with the WWE title is actually more akin to the end of Bret Hart's WWF run in 1997. Back then, Vince couldn't pay Bret what WCW was offering him and since Bret was WWF Champion at the time, Vince was afraid that Bret Hart would try to leave the WWF with the world title and walk onto WCW programming with it. This situation led to the infamous "Montreal Screw job".
On top of everything else, there are NO similarities in how they talk, wrestle, dress, or sound. As I said, CM Punk and Stone Cold are apples and oranges. CM Punk is not this generation's Stone Cold. CM Punk is this generations CM Punk.

WWE Kills CM Punk's Buzz at Summerslam with Del Rio and 52 year old Kevin Nash

I thought the whole idea lately has been to build CM Punk up as the next "Face" of the company, but apparently I was wrong. I don't think they know what they want to do. I was under the influence that after CM Punk made the biggest headlines in Pro Wrestling since the Attitude Era that the logical thing to do would be to push him to the moon and start to phase Cena into more of a Shawn Michaels 2002-2010 role. John Cena has reached a point where losing cleanly wouldn't hurt his character because he's done everything you can do in the business. Like I said, I guess I'm wrong though. The fact that Punk couldn't gain a clean pin fall victory over Cena goes to show that Vince McMahon is too scared to go in a totally new direction. Even Hogan passed the torch to the Ultimate Warrior with a clean pin fall at Wrestlemania 6. Why can't Cena do the same for CM Punk? CM Punk not getting a real win over Cena starts to paint CM Punk as an almost semi-heel because he didn't win clean at MITB and he didn't win clean at Summerslam. They're doing to Punk what they've been doing to Christian on Smackdown in his feud with Randy Orton... and that's not allow the new generation of possible main eventers to take over. Vince is scared.
Then to add insult to injury they completely killed all the build and buzz around CM Punk by having him drop the title in a weak "run of the mill" MITB briefcase cash-in by Alberto Del Rio. Yes, the Kevin Nash run-in was shocking and unexpected... but why? I already know where they are going with that, but it's another blog post in itself. I'm glad Kevin Nash is back, but the way they brought him back is completely lame. They shouldn't bring back an over 50 year old Kevin Nash at the expense of CM Punk's super build. I already know they are most likely going to go with Nash being Del Rio's body guard, or to a lesser extent they will have The Game and Nash in some sort of "Kliq" related favor... or both.
The one thing that gets me though is the "Anti-TNA" WWE Fans (not to be confused with the average WWE Fans). The same "Anti-TNA" WWE iwc fans that were made fun of Kevin Nash in TNA and called him a washed up has been are the same ones that totally marked out for Nash at the Royal Rumble and marked out for him at Summerslam. When Nash was in TNA, those fans said he stunk and needed to retire. Now, they're cheering him on as one guy said "It's nice to see the Jack Knife one last time". What are you talking about? If you watched TNA, he's been doing Jack Knife's up until the beginning of January 2011. No one cared. Now, that he did it on WWE television... the Anti-TNA contingent are all about Kevin Nash wrestling and/or getting involved. I don't know... just funny to watch.
I'm happy Kevin Nash is back, but I hate that WWE dropped the ball with CM Punk big time. Punk should've pinned Cena cleanly to end the show. Then if you MUST have Del Rio cash in and have a 50 year old Kevin Nash bury CM Punk... then do it on RAW the next night. *Shakes head at WWE Creative*... It's bull that Vince wouldn't let Del Rio cash in on Cena... but he'll let him cash in on Punk. Then tonight on RAW, Rey Mysterio gets a title shot at Del Rio??? What happened to WWE's almighty "rematch clause" that Cena cries every time he loses the World Title. Shouldn't Punk be getting a rematch? Or, at the very least Cena as much as I don't want to see Cena in a title match? *Shakes head in disbelief*

Is CM Punk a One Hit Wonder?

Having accomplished all this, how on earth could Cena possibly claim that CM Punk is a one hit wonder? I didn't even count his accomplishments in Ring of Honor, where he was a World Heavyweight Champion and 2-time Tag Team Champion. How can a 4-time WWE Heavyweight Champion be a one hit wonder? Even if Cena was talking strictly in terms of epic moments, CM Punk has had his share. From taking over The Nexus, to the Straight Edge Society... Punk has had his share of memorable moments. Let's take a look at some of CM Punk's Greatest Hits.

Who is the Real WWE Champion, CM Punk or John Cena?

On Raw last night, Triple H ordered CM Punk and John Cena to square off at Summerslam to decide who is the rightful WWE Champion. Both men have a WWE Championship belt, and both men lay claim to being the WWE Champion. Both men are also recognized as the WWE Champion, but just like in Highlander... There can be only one.

CM Punk Leaves WWE With the World Title

At MITB, CM Punk defeated John Cena and prevented Alberto Del Rio from fulfilling his destiny and cashing in his briefcase as he escaped with the WWE Championship, effectively leaving WWE with it's most prized possession. In an update recently, CM Punk uploaded a picture of the WWE Title in his fridge. This was Punk's 'Hostile Takeover' moment. We'll keep everyone posted. Congratulations to CM Punk for sticking it to corporate!

CM Punk Demands WWE Ice Cream Bars Be Brought Back in New Contract

CM Punk finally confronted Vince McMahon tonight on RAW, and it was worth the wait. The very first live contract negotiation did not end with the usual someone getting smashed through a table... match signings typically go... and boy was I glad. WWE actually remained unpredictable for that segment for the most part with the exception of John Cena once again interrupting so he could make it "all about Cena" like always. I'm about to call Cena 'Hogan 2.0' because he is a black hole swallowing the spotlight from all that is good.
Anyways, CM Punk was on fire on the microphone, demanding in his contract that Vince McMahon bring back the WWE ice cream bars. He also scolded Vince McMahon, telling him that he was "The voice of the voiceless". Punk said he was the voice for Colt Cabana and Luke Gallows... which actually got split "Colt Cabana"/"We want ice cream" chants. Then Cena comes out to try to make something that has nothing to do with him... all about him. John Cena called Punk a hypocrite. Punk laughed at John because John is the real hypocrite. John Cena always talked about being the underdog... and now he is no longer the underdog Punk said. He went on to say that Cena went from being the Boston Red Sox to the New York Yankees... that he was a dynasty now. Cena then proceeds to punch CM Punk, and that made CM Punk remember why he wants to leave the WWE and so he rips up the contract.
Now, the only thing that is getting on my nerves is how John Cena always has to come out and try to make everything about John Cena. CM Punk has the crowd eating out of his hand, but John Cena can't have that. He has to have all the attention. So, he'll come out and babble his usual crap... you know... the same cookie cutter "you think you're better than me? prove it" boring sap that Cena spews every week for the last 6 years. I'm looking forward to Money in the Bank. For ratings sake, put your money on CM Punk walking out with the title and Cena being fired.
